One person was killed and ten injured in a boat crash near Key West, Florida.
Three passengers were seriously injured when the boat capsized after hitting a fairway marker near Boca Chita Reef in Miami-Dade County, authorities said.
There were 14 people on board when the boat capsized just before 7 p.m. Sunday, Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue said in a news release. Associated PressSeven passengers suffered minor injuries, fire officials said.
The Archdiocese of Miami told CBS 4 Lucy Fernandez, 17, died of her injuries. She was a pupil of Our Lady of Lourdes.
More than 10 fire and rescue units and the Miami-Dade Police Marine Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, The Associated Press noted.
The injured were pulled from the water by Miami-Dade fire and police forces before other passengers, Florida Keys News report. The same report said three children were on board.
The seriously injured were airlifted from nearby Elliottkey Island to a hospital in Miami, authorities added.
Boca Chica is an island in the northern Florida Keys, located in Biscayne National Park off the coast of Miami-Dade County.
according to CBS NewsMiami-Dade Fire and Rescue Chief Juan Garandez said: “The police arrived first and pulled people out of the water — some of them in critical condition. They were taken to Elliotkey Island, where they were air rescued. Landed and transported critically ill patients.”
“As soon as we arrived, we joined the police station and we treated other people who were in the water around the boat. We took them to the island, they were assessed and some of them were taken to hospital,” he added. .
The Archdiocese of Miami said in a statement statement “Yesterday’s boating accident involving Our Lady of Lourdes and other students was a tragedy.
