An Irish school teacher, Enoch Burke, was arrested for returning Monday after he was banned from school for refusing to use the pronoun “them” to refer to a student, Irish news site RTE reported.

Wilson’s hospital school suspended Burke’s teaching while he underwent disciplinary proceedings for refusing to use a preferred pronoun for a student who identified as transgender, which he said would violate his Christian beliefs, and the court issued an injunction, temporarily banned him from teaching, according to torte. Regardless, Burke went back to school, and he was arrested and put in jail.

“I’m a teacher, I don’t want to go to jail,” Burke Say, according to the New York Post. “I wanted to be in my classroom today, which is where I was when I was arrested this morning…I love my school, its motto is Res Non Verba, ‘actions not words’, but I I’m here today because I said I wouldn’t be called a boy or a girl.” (Related: Social media can influence young girls to become transgender. Here’s how)

He was initially suspended on August 24, but a court order was made on Friday after he continued to attend school, according to RTE. He ignored a court order preventing him from teaching on Monday and told the court it would be against his conscience to obey it.

According to RTE, Burke told the court that he loved his students and the subjects he taught and that he did not want to go to jail, but that he could not participate against his conscience in the child’s gender transition process.

“To be clear, the teacher was jailed for breaching a court order, not for ‘misgender’. But a court order barring him from school because he refused to use ‘them’ for male pupils should not have been granted IMO,” Helen Joyce, author and commentator on transgender issues wrote. “Wicked and ridiculous.”
