Fans of Red Dead Online thought the game was dead and buried, and even held a funeral for it, after Rockstar Games admitted it would no longer release major updates. However, that doesn’t mean support is over.
While it’s certainly becoming less important in the studio (especially with Grand Theft Auto VI being developed), Rockstar said in July that it would be adding some new content and addressing player complaints with bug fixes and more. Today, without any kind of announcement, Red Dead Online received a new update to do just that.
There is no mention of the new update on the Red Dead Online website, but Rockstar’s Support Site does list what’s included. In terms of new content, three new hardcore telegram missions have been added, which can be completed by one person or up to four people together. They were involved in stealing supplies and capturing members including seventh-generation cult leaders. Telegram can now also be launched from the player menu and camp.
The other three Telegrams have been updated to include a new position each, with two showdown modes – Hostile Territory and King Movement – each receiving four new positions. The main focus of the update, though, is clearly to address some of the issues players are experiencing. For example, there are several situations that can cause the game to crash, but the update should correct those.
It’s worth remembering that this isn’t the last hurrah for Red Dead Online either. In July, Rockstar said the game would have multiple updates even after the summer. They may not appear often, but players can expect more minor content additions and fixes until Rockstar finally ends support for it.
Still, the future of the Red Dead Redemption franchise is rather murky. There’s no indication that a new game is in the works, and a remake of the first game has reportedly been put on hold. Considering that Rockstar’s main priority right now is Grand Theft Auto VI, we probably shouldn’t expect to hear anything substantive about the Red Dead franchise for a long time.
