Apple stopped bundling power adapters with the iPhone 12 lineup in 2020, citing the need to reduce e-waste and make the product packaging easier to transport. However, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice did not share Cupertino’s reasoning.
The ministry’s National Consumer Secretariat accused Apple of shifting the cost burden to consumers by removing the power adapter. The ministry also said Apple could have taken better steps to address environmental waste by adopting a USB-C port for the iPhone, rather than continuing to rely on a proprietary Lightning port.
Back in December 2020, a Brazilian consumer protection agency also asked Apple to re-bundle iPhones with chargers, a decision announced by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice. This later led to a fine of about $2 million by consumer protection agencies against Apple.
The order issued by Brazil’s justice ministry on Tuesday noted that despite being fined, Apple has not changed its practices. To implement the moratorium, the agency sent a letter to consumer watchdogs across the country “to keep them informed of this decision, monitor and take such action as they deem appropriate.”
