Creative Assembly, the studio behind Total War strategy series and survival horror game Alien Isolation, is working on a new project.
Following the release of Total War: Warhammer 3 earlier this year, the studio has blog post (opens in new tab) It is developing an “action item that will build new franchises.” The post hints that the yet-to-be-named game will be played in third-person, with Unreal Engine 5 built in.
Creative Assembly was eager to lower expectations, saying it would be “a long wait before more details are revealed”. While the game is being developed by Total War Saga: Troy maker CA Sofia, the studio’s work on future Total War releases won’t stop as an independent in-house team will take over the new game.
no stranger to action
While Creative Assembly is best known for its critically acclaimed Total War strategy games, it’s no stranger to action. Its first game in the late 80s was a platform shooter, and since then it has gone on to release its fair share of action-oriented games.
It launched in 2005 the spin-off Spartan: Total Warrior, a hack-and-slash God of War clone that casts you as a Spartan soldier. Your mission is to defend your homeland from Roman invasion while summoning the power of the ancient Greek gods. It was followed by 2008’s Vikings: Battle for Asgard, which used a similar formula but based on Norse mythology.
In 2014, Creative Assembly gained more attention with the release of Alien: Isolation. The survival horror game has been critically acclaimed for its strong atmosphere and clever adaptation of the Alien movie. Earlier this year, the studio released Hyenas, a multiplayer sci-fi FPS set to launch in 2023. It’s positioned as a fast-paced arena shooter built around zero-gravity combat.
All of this is not to say that Creative Assembly is in any way abandoning its strategic roots. The blog post suggests that the studio has scheduled future Total War installments. It also recently told TechRadar Gaming that it plans to return to Total War: Medieval 3.
Even more tantalizing, Creative Assembly appears to have a second unannounced game cooking in its oven. The blog post said the upcoming action film “will be alongside Total War, Hyena, and another yet-to-be-announced project from the studio.” At this rate, Creative Assembly fans will be spoilt for choice.
