Malaki, Slovakia (AP) — Poland and the Czech Republic signed a deal Saturday to protect Slovakian airspace as Slovakia ditched its old Soviet-mad MiG-29 jets.
This protection will continue until Slovakia receives new F-16s from the United States, which is expected to happen in 2024.
The agreement was signed at the Slovak Air Force Base by Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, Czech Defense Minister Jana Cernochova and Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad.
Slovakia has a fleet of 11 MiG-29 jets, and last month Nad said Slovakia might consider donating them Travel to Ukraine under certain conditions.
Since Russia’s invasion began on February 24, Ukraine has urged Western allies to provide it with warplanes to challenge Russia’s air superiority.
