  • Biden announced he would forgive $10,000 of federal student loan debt for borrowers earning less than $125,000 a year.
  • While Democrats have long called for student debt relief, Congressional action has stalled.
  • Some Democrats say Biden has gone too far and that his sweeping debt relief is sending the “wrong message.”

President Joe Biden’s sweeping student loan forgiveness program has drawn mixed reactions from Democrats, many of whom have long called for student debt relief.

Biden announced Wednesday that he will cancel $10,000 of student debt for borrowers earning less than $125,000 a year and $20,000 for Pell Grant students.

Republicans opposed the plan, calling it “very unfair,” while some Democrats called for more relief. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she would “continue to push” for more relief “for those who are most indebted.”

While criticism from Republicans is to be expected, here are Democrats criticizing Biden’s debt relief plan and what they’re saying.
